This image was created using a biological research technique known as "clearing and staining." This technique uses a series of chemicals to stain different tissues specific colors (i.e, bone is stained purplish red and cartilage is stained blue), while dissolving other tissues away or making them look transparent. This specific piece is of a freshwater angelfish (Pterophyllum sp.), which is very common in the aquarium trade. They are native to Central and South America and are unusually-shaped cichlids.

Care Instructions

Hang on the wall and enjoy! While this product has a coating that will significantly enhance the life of the artwork and reduce color fading, I recommend not hanging this piece outdoors in an unprotected area or in direct sunlight. I have never had an issue with colors fading in light in my 8 years of making artwork (the 8 year old pieces still hold their colors excellently), but avoiding direct sun exposure for all wall art, in general, will help the colors stay vibrant for as long as you stay vibrant!

Message from the Artist

Acid Angel is the first piece of art I created where I shifted away from purely scientific imagery to a more pop/modern art style in combination with biology. I am very proud of this piece and hope you enjoy it! While I use this technique to learn more about fish biology, it also serves as the basis for my artwork. I then photograph the cleared and stained organism and transform it digitally into the work you see here. Includes a wall-hanging system and lamination to enhance the colors and protect the canvas.
