This image was created using a biological research technique known as "clearing and staining." This technique uses a series of chemicals to stain different tissues specific colors (i.e, bone is stained purplish red and cartilage is stained blue), while dissolving other tissues away or making them look transparent. This specific piece depicts a Dwarf Clawed Frog (Hymenochirus curtipes). This aquatic frog is commonly found in the pet trade and often lies motionless in fish tanks for long periods of time.

Please note that this image is available with a white background, a black background, and one of each (all each 8x8" - please see a different posted if you want the larger 24x24" sizes). The color options are not simple inversions of the colors and mirror images, but different vantage points of the same frog highlighting different aspects of their anatomy, with the white background being a view of the belly (ventral view) and the black background being a view of the backside (dorsal view). I find these are great to display next to or near each other as a pair for a nice juxtaposition and you'll get a little discount if you by them as a diptych/pair!

Care Instructions

Hang on the wall and enjoy! While this product has a coating that will significantly enhance the life of the artwork and reduce color fading, I recommend not hanging this piece outdoors in an unprotected area or in direct sunlight. I have never had an issue with colors fading in light in my 8 years of making artwork (the 8 year old pieces still hold their colors excellently), but avoiding direct sun exposure for all wall art, in general, will help the colors stay vibrant for as long as you stay vibrant!
